Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Medical Device Reprocessing Manager, the Surgical Processor is an integral member of the health care team. The Surgical Processor is required to ensure Flexible Endoscopes and specialized equipment utilized in Endoscopy is cleaned and maintained according to established national standards and is ready for use when required for specific procedures. The incumbent is responsible for the manual cleaning, high level disinfection and preparation of equipment required in the Endoscopy department. Other duties include set up of equipment in theaters, traveling to other departments for scope set up, and transporting equipment on a daily basis. Assisting with the transportation of patients to and from the Endoscopy theaters to the preparation and recovery area, patient care units and emergency department is also required. The Surgical Processor is required to provide patients with a clean, comfortable and safe environment by utilizing judgment in the execution and prioritization of general housekeeping duties, use of infection control practices, linen and waste handling, assisting patients with general requests and maintaining patient confidentiality. The Surgical Processor works both independently and in a team by prioritizing and making decisions regarding work flow based on the number and types of procedures per day.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma from a recognized institution is required. Internal candidates without a High School Diploma will be considered.
Medical Device Reprocessing Qualification from a recognized institution is required. Preference will be given to applicants that have already attained certification from CSA or IAHCSMM.
Alberta Health Services requires all employees working in medical device reprocessing to be a qualified graduate from a Surgical Processor course or program and successfully completed their Certified Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (CMDRT) Exam – no later than March 31, 2016.
Mandatory certification will be a condition of employment for all employees performing MDR duties in the designated areas as of April 1, 2016.
Current BCLS-HCP from Heart & Stroke is required.
Knowledge/experience with WHMIS and understanding of dirty, clean and sterile terminology with some knowledge of microbiology principles are required.
Six (6) months experience in a similar/related capacity and one (1) year of hospital experience are preferred.
